Tar Heels Receiving Votes In NFCA Preseason Poll

STARKVILLE, Miss. - The North Carolina softball team will enter the 2008 season as one of the top 50 teams according to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Preseason Poll. The Tar Heels will face off against six teams ranked in the top 25 this season and against eight teams that are receiving votes.
Carolina received five votes in the initial poll, which was a tie for the 42nd highest total. A pair of ACC teams were ranked back-to-back in the top 25 as Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech were ranked 16 and 17. Other teams receiving votes in the ACC were Florida State and NC State.
The highest-ranked team the Tar Heels are scheduled to face in 2008 will be the No. 13 Florida Gators when Carolina travels to Gainesville, Fla. for the University of Florida Cox Communications Classic (Feb. 15-17). The Tar Heels and Gators will face off twice in the tournament. The Hawaii Spring Fling Invitational will see Carolina take on a pair of top 25 teams in the host No. 15 Hawaii and No. 22 Texas. The NFCA Leadoff Classic will pit Carolina against its fourth top 25 team, No. 24 Louisiana-Lafayette.
The Tar Heels will meet Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech on three separate occasions during the year with the Yellow Jackets visiting Chapel Hill (March 29-30) and the Tar Heels making the trek to Blacksburg, Va. at the end of the regular season April 26-27.
Other teams receiving votes that Carolina will face this year will be South Carolina, Illinois State, Florida State, NC State, Tennessee Tech, Nebraska, Texas Tech and Iowa.
