Coleman And Fike Claim Titles At Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Freshmen Callan Fike and Patience Coleman each picked up a win on the final day of the Penn State National on Saturday in University Park, Pa. Fike captured the 1,000 meter run, while Coleman set a provisional mark in the high jump with a victory in her first meet of the season. Donte Nall also performed well in the high jump as he also tallied a provisional mark. Several other Tar Heels contributed top 10 finishes on the second and final day of one of the premiere indoor meets of the season.
Coleman became the second Tar Heel in as many days to reach an NCAA provisional mark, following in the steps of fellow freshman Walter Henning, as she cleared 5-10 in the high jump. The meet was the first of Coleman's career after sitting out the opening two meets in Chapel Hill. Fike captured the 1,000 meter run with a time of 2:55.45 for UNC's second win of the day. The Cary native also competed in the mile run crossing the line in 5:01.32 good for 17th in the event.
Tyra Johnson finished 10th in the 200 meter dash invite for Carolina as she crossed the line in 24.49. In the open 200, Shardae Anderson took 20th with a time of 25.20. The duo of Callie Pottinger and Christine Johnson finished back-to-back in the 400 as they have done on more than one occasion this year. Pottinger tied for fourth with a time of 56.08, just ahead of Johnson's fifth-place time of 56.27. Colleen Farley and Dominique Jackson finished 12th and 14th, respectively in the 800 for the Tar Heels.
Joining Coleman in the high jump was Ashley Haislip who tied for eighth on the day as she cleared 5-5.75. Gabby Gioia competed in the triple jump and posted a mark of 35-9.25. Several Tar Heels were put to the test in the shot put and leading the way was freshman Mary Angell who finished ninth with a toss of 46-7.25, just an inch further than teammate Kimberly Warren who took home 10th. Norjai Palma tied for 17th by tossing the shot 45-1.50 and Jocelyn White finished in 22nd posting a mark of 44-6.25.
On the men's side, Charles Cox finished in second place in the 400 as he finished his two laps in a time of 48.28. Joining Cox in the 400 was fellow freshman Ian Williamson who took home 15th with a time of 49.47. In the 800, Adam Smith crossed the line in 1:53.78 which was good enough for seventh place in the event. John Curtiss and Andrew Rotz added another pair of top 10 finishes for Carolina as each finished eighth in the 1,000 meter run. Curtiss finished with a time of 2:30.05 in the open 1,000 and Rotz crossed the line in 2:28.38 in the 1,000 invite. Alex Ray finished in 16th in the 3,000 invite, while fellow distance runner Zack Dawson finished in 11th in the open 3,000.
Donte Nall cleared 7-00.25 and equaled the NCAA provisional mark in the high jump and was joined in the high jump by Mateo Sossah who cleared 6-5 which tied him for 15th on the day. Austin Davis continued his strong performance in the triple jump as he cleared 50 feet and finished in fifth place with a jump of 50-2. Ian Reynolds tied for eighth in the shot put with a toss of 53-1, just ahead of teammate Walter Henning who threw the shot 52-4.50 to wrap up the field events.
Coleman and Nall's provisional marks are the third and fourth of the year for Carolina as they join freshmen LaToya James (60-meter hurdles) and Walter Henning (weight throw). The Tar Heels will be in action again on Friday, Feb. 1 when they host the Texas Roadhouse Carolina Classic in the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse. The meet will be held on Friday and Saturday and includes 30 different teams, the French national team and will feature five ACC foes.
