UNC Student-Athlete Advisory Council Constitution

ARTICLE I
Name of Organization
The name of the organization shall be the Student-Athlete Advisory Council (hereafter referred to as SAAC)
ARTICLE II
Purpose
A. Serve as a voice for all student-athletes at the University of North Carolina
B. Opportunity for the student-athlete population to more effectively communicate with the administration of the University of North Carolina Department of Athletics.
C. Medium for student-athlete leaders to assemble to discuss their experiences as student-athletes at the University of North Carolina.
D. Distribute information concerning the student-athlete experience at the University of North Carolina to their respective teams.
E. Encourage and organize the involvement of the University of North Carolina student-athletes in campus and community projects and events.
F. As a recognized organization of the University of North Carolina, SAAC will educate the student body by offering activities and events to the general University community.
ARTICLE III
Membership
A. Eligibility for membership
a. One representative plus one alternate from each team. Representatives must be eligible for competition for intercollegiate athletics at the University of North Carolina
B. Method of selection
a. Representatives - each team will elect one representative with the assistance of the head coach and the Director Student-Athlete Development, who will have speaking and voting privileges at the SAAC meetings. This representative will begin serving their term in the fall for one year.
b. Alternates - each team will elect one alternate with the assistance of the head coach and the Director of Student-Athlete Development, who can attend in addition to the representative, but who will represent the team if the elected representative is unable to attend the SAAC function.
C. Attendance policies
Attendance at all SAAC meetings is required unless excused due to team competition, team practice, or class. In the case of an excused absence, representatives must notify the SAAC advisor (Dr. Cricket Lane) via email at least 24 hours prior to the meeting. SAAC representatives are allowed one unexcused absence per year. Any subsequent unexcused absence will result in dismissal from SAAC. It is the responsibility of each SAAC representative to sign in at every meeting. (approved 2/28/07)
ARTICLE IV
Structure and the Executive Board
A. Executive Board will consist of Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Secretary/Treasurer, 4 senior SAAC members, and Director of Student-Athlete Development.
B. Duties of the Executive Board:
a. Chairperson
i. Presides over all SAAC meetings
ii. Serve as the spokesperson of the SAAC
b. Vice Chairperson
i. Will perform the functions of the office of the Chairperson in their absence
c. Secretary/Treasurer
i. Will take meeting minutes
ii. Will handle any funds generated by the SAAC
d. Director of Student-Athlete Development
i. Work with officers in conducting the business of the SAAC
ii. Serve as liaison between the SAAC and the Athletics Department
C. Nominations
a. Will be solicited for Chairperson and Vice Chairperson. The representative receiving the most votes will be the Chairperson of the SAAC. The representative receiving the second most votes will be the Vice Chairperson.
b. Will be solicited for Secretary/Treasurer. The representative receiving the most votes will be the Secretary/Treasurer of the SAAC.
D. Voting
a. Each representative will vote for officers of the SAAC which will occur at the first meeting of the regular academic year.
E. Officers shall serve a term of one (1) year. It is permissible for an individual to be voted to an office for more than one year.
F. Administration
a. Director of Student-Athlete Development will serve as the moderator of the SAAC.
b. Other Athletic Administrators will serve as non-voting members of the SAAC.
ARTICLE V
Conduct of Business
A. Meetings
a. Meetings will be scheduled each month when school is in session. There will be no meeting scheduled during the summer session. The date, time, and location of the meetings will be determined by the Director of Athletics and the Executive Board.
b. Two meetings per semester will include the Director of Athletics and Athletics Department Administrators.
B. A simple majority of representatives must be present to conduct the business of the SAAC. Each team will have one (1) vote.
C. Motions will be passed by a majority of the representatives present at the meeting.
D. These articles may be amended by a two-thirds vote of the total membership of the SAAC and approval of the Director of Athletics.
E. Special meetings may be scheduled at the request of the Executive Board or the SAAC. A majority vote of the total SAAC is necessary to hold special meetings. SAAC members will be notified of special meetings at least seven (7) days in advance of the meeting.
F. Parliamentary procedures shall be followed at all meetings.
ARTICLE VI
Representation on other Committees
A. ACC SAAC
a. The SAAC will elect two (2) representatives and two (2) alternates to represent the University of North Carolina on the Atlantic Coast Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
B. SAAC Subcommittees
a. Each representative will serve on one of the following subcommittees
i. Policies and Procedures
1. NCAA
2. ACC
3. Athletics Department
4. Team
ii. Information and Communication
1. Calendar
2. S-A Support Days
3. Newsletter/Website
iii. Student-Athlete Well-being
