
Tar Heels Take Third At Regionals

CLEMMONS, N.C. --- North Carolina senior Brie Felnagle and junior Lauren Holesh earned all-region honors in leading the Tar Heels to a third-place finish at the NCAA Southeast Cross Country Regional Saturday at Tanglewood State Park. Freshman Ashley Verplank (32nd), senior Morgan Stengel (53rd) and sophomore Callan Fike (63rd) rounded out the scorers for UNC. Sophomore Evan Watchempino earned all-region honors for the men's squad with a 15th-place finish.
Felnagle completed the 6K course in 20 minutes, 15.4 seconds, less than eight seconds behind regional champion Tasmin Fanning of Virginia Tech. Holesh was close in pursuit, crossing the line in 20:39.4. Verplank finished in 21:53.1, with Stengel (22:19.0) and Fike (22:26.1) next across. Sophomores Courtlin LaReau (94th/22:58.8) and Kristy Longman (112nd/23:13.8) also competed for the Tar Heels.
On the men's side, Watchempino's time of 31:05.6 led Carolina and was good for 15th place overall. Sophomore John Curtis (54th/32:17.7), senior Brock Baker (72nd/32:46.1), junior Zach Dawson (77th/32:52.0) and senior Jeremy Cramer (79th/32:52.3) also scored for the Tar Heels. Sophomore Adam Cunningham (91st/33:08.1) and senior Ian Bracy (129th/33:52.8) completed the UNC contingent, which finished 11th in the team competition.
