CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --- No. 13 North Carolina captured a tightly-contested doubles point and rolled to a 6-1 win over No. 48 Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Snyder Tennis Center. After the first two doubles matches were split, No. 51 Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang topped Jennifer Stevens and Amanda Rales, 9-8 (2), at the No. 2 position to give UNC the momentum-swinging point.
After winning the doubles point, Carolina (15-7, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) dominated the first three completed singles matches to secure the dual match victory. Junior Laura Reichert quickly made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Maggie Yahner at No. 4. Soon after Reichert's win, No. 8 Sanaz Marand continued her stellar spring with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Rales at the top position. Junior Meg Fanjoy took out Cathy Nimitz at No. 6, 6-0, 6-1, to seal the win.
Junior Sophie Grabinksi made it 5-0 in favor of UNC with a 6-4, 6-3 triumph over Lara Alexander at No. 5 singles. No. 97 Smith needed a third-set tiebreak to win her match at No. 3, outlasting Lindsey Pereira, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (6).
Virginia (9-11, 5-5 ACC) got on the board with a win in the final match of the day. Stevens fought off a rally by No. 29 Tsang to pick up a 6-0, 1-6, 7-5 victory.
Carolina will conclude its regular season ledger Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. against Virginia Tech.
