CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The UNC Department of Athletics honored its graduating student-athletes April 30 at the second-annual Student-Athlete Graduation Reception. Held at the William and Ida Friday Center, the program recognized Tar Heels who will earn their degrees in 2008 or who graduated in December of 2007.
The event was organized by members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council, working with Student-Athlete Development intern Rob Ockenfuss. Members of the planning committee were Yael Averbuch (women's soccer), Brock Baker (track and field), Alyssa Francona (softball), Sophie Grabinski (women's tennis), Lauren Hunt (women's golf), Katie Wood (rowing) and Kara Wright (gymnastics).
SAAC members initiated the ceremony last year in response to the fact that that many student-athletes who participate in spring sports miss the UNC's May commencement ceremonies while competing.
Tar Heel women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance delivered the keynote address and Bernadette Gray-Little, Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, was on hand to offer words of congratulations on behalf of the UNC administration. Following the ceremony, graduates chatted with coaches, administrators, friends and family at a reception.
Each of the 52 graduates honored received a certificate of recognition. Approximately 125 UNC student athletes earned their degrees in May or graduated last December.
