Tar Heels Finish 14th In Sports Academy Directors' Cup

Chapel Hill - The University of North Carolina finished the 2007-08 athletic season in 14th place nationally in the annual Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings, the 13th time in the 15-year history of the award the Tar Heels are the highest finishing school in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The Tar Heels compiled 978.5 points, seven ahead of Florida State, 109.5 ahead of 17th place Virginia and 157.5 points ahead of 19th place Duke. Carolina missed out on a Top 10 finish by 62.5 points, about the number of points awarded for a 13th place finish in an NCAA competition.
Stanford won the award for the 14th straight year with 1,461 points. UCLA, Michigan, Arizona State, Texas, Florida, California, LSU, Penn State and Georgia filled out the rest of the Top 10. Ohio State, Texas A&M and Southern California placed 11th through 13th, respectively, ahead of the Tar Heels.
The undefeated national champion field hockey team led all Carolina scorers with 100 points, followed by a third place finish from both baseball and men's basketball (83 points apiece) and fifth-place showings from women's basketball (73 points) and women's lacrosse (60 points).
The Directors' Cup measures a school's postseason success in men's and women's sports. Each school is ranked based upon its 10-highest men's and 10-highest women's finishes.
The Tar Heels won the inaugural trophy in 1993-94 (then known as the Sears Cup) and have averaged a fifth-place finish in the award's history.
