
Tar Heels Wrap Up Day Two At Furman Fall Classic

GREENVILLE, N.C. --- Four North Carolina women's tennis players advanced to consolation bracket finals on the second day of the Furman Fall Classic Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center. Junior Katrina Tsang (flight one) senior Sophie Grabinski (flight two), freshman Shinann Featherston (flight three) and freshman Jocelyn Ffriend (flight six) rebounded from opening round losses with singles victories. Play at Furman will conclude Sunday morning.
In flight one, Tsang fell to No. 54 Ana Zubori of South Carolina, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, before dispatching Northwestern's Elena Chernyakova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Tsang, ranked No. 23 in the preseason ITA poll, will face No. 24 Katie Rybakova of Florida State Sunday morning.
Grabinski rallied from an opening-round loss to Clemson's Josipa Bek to defeat South Carolina's Natasa Vuckovic, 7-5, 6-2. She will meet Vanderbilt's Keilly Ulery in Sunday's consolation final.
In flight three, Featherston, playing in her first collegiate singles tournament, scored a 6-4, 6-4, win over Tennessee's Maria Sorbello in her second career match. She will face Clemson's Ina Hadziselimovic for fifth place Sunday.
Ffriend dropped a tight one in her opening round flight six match, falling 7-6 (8), 3-6, 6-1, to Florida State's Bonny Davidson, before defeating Northwestern's Keri Robison in straight sets, 7-5, 6-0.
Also in action Saturday were seniors Laura Reichert, Meg Fanjoy and Hanes Harris and junior Linzee Mabrey. Reichert will face Furman's Lauren Tomory for seventh place in flight five Sunday, while Fanjoy will play South Carolina's Suzie Mansour for seventh in flight six. Harris lost her lone flight seven match, while Mabrey defeated Furman's Brooke Mosteller, 7-5, 6-2.
