Scotton Leads Carolina At Northeast Duals

TROY, N.Y. - North Carolina junior 157-pounder Thomas Scotton went unbeaten in three matches Saturday to lead the Tar Heels at the Journeymen/Asics Northeast Duals. Carolina (2-3-1) suffered losses to No. 12 Lehigh (26-10) and Binghamton (18-16) before closing their day with an 18-18 tie with Columbia.
Scotton, who is ranked No. 14 nationally at 157, improved to 11-0 and remained unbeaten on the young season after scoring major decisions against Lehigh and Binghamton and a decision in the finale against Columbia. In addition to Scotton's efforts, the Tar Heels also got multiple victories from No. 11 Nick Stabile, who is now 6-1 on the season, at 149 and No. 11 Dennis Drury, now 8-2, at 197.
In the opening loss to Lehigh, the Tar Heels got wins from their three ranked wrestlers - Stabile, Scotton and Drury. Stabile, who scored a 7-1 decision over Brian Tanen at 149, and Scotton, who dropped Sean Bilodeau with an 11-3 major decision at 157, gave Carolina back-to-back wins to cut the Mountain Hawks' lead to 10-7 through six bouts.
Lehigh then took three of the final four bouts with Drury claiming UNC's only win over this stretch with a 3-1 decision against Joe Kennedy at 197.
In dual No. 2, Carolina jumped out to a commanding 16-6 lead with just three matches to go but saw Binghamton score 12 unanswered points over the final three bouts to claim the comeback victory.
After Rocco Welleck got UNC on the board with a 6-1 decision over Garret Morabito at 133, Stabile and Scotton followed with a decision and a major decision to give the Tar Heels their first lead at 10-6. Stabile topped Donnie Vinson, 4-0, at 149, and Scotton picked up his second major of the day, 11-2, over Justin Lister.
Kyle Kiss (11-4 over Matt Kaylor) and Ben Fiacco (9-3 over Matt Berretta) followed with decisions to extend the lead to 16-6, before the Bearcats took the next three bouts. Nate Schiedel pinned Drury in 1:27 at 197 to put Binghamton back in the match, and Corey Waite's decision at heavyweight gave BU the win.
In their final dual of the day, the Tar Heels and Lions went back and forth before ending the match in the 18-18 draw. Jeremy Shaw downed Andrew Grabfelder, 7-1, and Danny Lopes followed with a 5-2 win over Jake O'Hara for a 6-3 UNC advantage. Scotton followed two bouts later with a 5-4 decision against Matt Dunn to regain the lead for the Tar Heels.
Columbia picked up a decision at 165 and an injury default at 174 to grab a 15-9 lead. Nick Tenpenny followed with a 10-4 decision over Stephen West at 184, and Drury added a pin of Chris Manna at 197 in just 1:06 to give UNC an 18-15 advantage before the Lions bounced back with a decision at heavyweight to knot the score at 18.
The Tar Heels are back in action Friday in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Maryland at Fetzer Gym.
