MADISON, Wis. --- No. 11 North Carolina continued its standout doubles play but was unable to sustain the momentum in singles, as the Tar Heels fell to No. 5 Stanford, 5-2, Saturday morning in a consolation match in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin's A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Senior Laura Reichert bounced back from a tough loss Friday to post UNC's lone singles victory, a 6-4, 1-6, 6-3 triumph over Courtney Clayton.
UNC (6-2) did not have to sweat out the doubles point against the Cardinal, as the No. 15 tandem of Sophie Grabinski and Sanaz Marand set the tone with an 8-3 win over No. 41 Lindsay Burdette and Hilary Barte at the top of the lineup. The senior duo of Reichert and Meg Fanjoy then sealed the point with an 8-6 victory over Logan Hansen and Jennifer Yen at No. 3. Senior Austin Smith and junior Katrina Tsang completed the doubles sweep with an 8-7 (0) win over Carolyn McVeigh and Jessica Nguyen at No. 2.
After the break, it was Stanford (5-1) that surged to an early lead. Despite dropping the first set, 6-0, to Grabinski at No. 4, McVeigh rebounded to win the first singles match for the Cardinal, 0-6, 6-1, 6-2, and even the match at 1. Nguyen then disposed of Tsang at No. 2 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, to give Stanford its first lead of the afternoon.
Carolina briefly pulled even on the heels of Reichert's three-set win over Clayton, but the Pac-10 power was too much. No. 99 Smith fell to No. 97 Burdette, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 before Barte won a top-30 showdown with Marand to seal the victory for Stanford. No. 26 Barte topped No. 47 Marand in two very even sets, 6-4, 7-5.
Stanford's Veronica Li finished off Jelena Durisic, 6-3, 7-6 (2), at No. 5 to end the match.
UNC will wrap up competition in the event Sunday when the Tar Heels face the host Wisconsin Badgers at 9 a.m. CT.
