Tar Heels Record First ACC Win Against Maryland

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The 42nd-ranked UNC Tar Heels stopped a two-match losing skid with a decisive win against No. 75 Maryland on Friday afternoon.
The Tar Heels swept every match played for a 7-0 victory over the Terrapins.
Carolina set the pace early by winning all three doubles matches played. Clay Donato and Taylor Fogleman opened up play with an 8-3 win, their 12th victory of the regular season and their 23rd of the 2008-09 campaign. Brennan Boyajian and Zach Hunter quickly followed with an 8-5 win, a score that was repeated in UNC's favor by Andrew Crone and Luke Mojica to complete the three-match doubles sweep.
In singles, it was senior captain Taylor Fogleman leading the way for the Tar Heels once again. Fogleman's 6-1, 6-1 victory extended his winning streak to 10 matches, and improved his regular season record to 16-1. The senior from Louisiana's 24th singles victory of 2008-09 matched his 2007-08 win total with seven regular season opponents left on the schedule.
No. 36 Clay Donato then followed with a 6-4, 6-0 victory versus Maryland's David Kwon to put the Tar Heels on the verge of clinching the match. Zach Hunter came through with a win to seal the Terrapins' fate, beating Alex Aksanov 6-2, 6-4.
Brennan Boyajian recorded a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles to increase the Tar Heels' lead to 5-0. Andrew Crone and Luke Mojica split their first sets, and with the match already decided, played 10-point third set tiebreakers. Both won to make the match a 7-0 shutout.
Carolina heads back to the courts on Saturday to face another ACC opponent, Boston College. The Tar Heels will play the Eagles at 1:00 p.m. at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
