WEYMOUTH, Mass. --- No. 18 North Carolina rebounded from a pair of losses at Miami and Florida State last weekend in impressive fashion, taking care of No. 75 Boston College, 6-1, Friday night at the Weymouth Club. The Tar Heels dropped just seven games in sweeping the doubles point and then collected five straight-set singles victories to grab their first Atlantic Coast Conference dual match win since topping Wake Forest, 6-1, on March 7.
With senior Sophie Grabinski back from an extended illness, the Tar Heels (13-6) were able to return to a more stable lineup in doubles. That immediately paid dividends, as No. 54 Austin Smith and Katrina Tsang rolled past Katarina Gajic and Alina Sullivan, 8-0 at No. 2. No. 4 Grabinski and Sanaz Marand then clinched the point with an 8-4 victory over Lauren Cash and Dasha Cherkasov at the top position. The senior duo of Meg Fanjoy and Laura Reichert then completed the sweep with an 8-3 win over Katharine Atwell and Lana Krasnopolski at No. 3.
No. 93 Tsang, who has lost just one singles match in six weeks, got UNC off to a quick 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Gajic at No. 2. No. 53 Marand then dispatched Krasnopolsky at the top of the lineup with relative ease, 6-1, 6-2, to make it 3-0.
Reichert then clinched the match at No. 5 with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sullivan at No. 5 to improve the Tar Heels to 3-2 in ACC play. Fanjoy made it 5-0 at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brittany Delaney, before Smith's 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Cash pushed it to 6-0.
Boston College (6-8, 2-5 ACC) got on the board in the evening's final match, topping No. 86 Grabinski at No. 4, 4-6, 6-3, (10-6).
UNC will complete its five-week, nine-match road trip Sunday with an 11 a.m. match at Maryland.
