Tar Heels Celebrate Year At All-Sports Banquet

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - University of North Carolina student-athletes, coaches, administrators and staff celebrated the successes of the 2008-09 school year Monday evening at the department's annual All-Sports Banquet. Held at the Dean E. Smith Center, the event recognized individuals and teams that have distinguished themselves on and off the field this year.
"Each spring, we have a great opportunity to pause and look back at the successes of the year," said Dick Baddour, UNC's Director of Athletics. "Athletic achievements like national and conference championships get plenty of attention, and deservedly so. But we want to make sure that we also celebrate the exceptional things that our student-athletes have done academically and in the community. This evening's event gives us the chance to recognize some of those outstanding individuals in front of their peers and the rest of the department and to make sure they know how proud of them we all are."
Adam Warren and Yael Averbuch were announced as recipients of the Mildred McCaskill Award, which is presented each year to one male and one female senior student-athlete who demonstrate excellence in athletics, scholarship and community service. Warren, a member of the baseball team, is a business administration major from New Bern, N.C. Averbuch, a member of the women's soccer team, is a psychology major from Upper Montclair, N.J.
John Powell and Morgan Stengel were honored with the ACC Senior Scholar Award, which goes to one male and one female from each Atlantic Coast Conference school who demonstrate excellence in academics and athletics. Powell, a member of the men's fencing team, is an English major from New Haven, Conn. Stengel, a member of the women's cross country and track and field teams, is a business administration major from Nashville, Tenn.
Chase Rice received the John Lotz Award, given to the student-athlete who best exemplifies the spirit of the late John Lotz, who served as UNC's Assistant Athletic Director of Campus and Community Relations and also was an assistant basketball coach for the Tar Heels. The award goes to a student-athlete who succeeds under adverse circumstances, overcoming difficulties while maintaining a positive attitude. Rice, a senior on the football team, is a management and society major from Asheville, N.C.
Six student-athletes were honored with the ACC Top Six for Service Award, which is presented to six individuals at each conference school who have demonstrated dedication and commitment to community service and outreach programs. Tar Heels honored were Katie Brooks (women's lacrosse/women's soccer), Eugenia Delbono (rowing), Marcus Ginyard (men's basketball), Lindsay McIlvain (women's swimming and diving), Anna Rodenbough (women's soccer) and Kennedy Tinsley (football). Brooks is a senior psychology major from?Winchester, Mass. Delbono, a senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., is working toward a double major in international studies and Spanish. Ginyard, a senior communication studies major, is from Alexandria, Va. McIlvain, a senior business administration major, is from Brentwood, Tenn. Rodenbough, a senior biomedical engineering major, is from Greensboro, N.C. Tinsley, a junior exercise and sport science major, is from Greensboro, N.C.
The winners of several previously-announced awards and honors were recognized at the banquet. Garrett Reynolds was the recipient of the Tatum Award, a University honor presented to a student-athlete who has performed with distinction in his or her sport and who has contributed to the campus through participation in outreach activities. Reynolds, a senior from Knoxville,?Tenn., is majoring in communication studies.
Five student-athletes were tapped for Phi Beta Kappa honorary society during the 2008-09 school year. They are Mary Borgo (women's fencing, Pittsburgh, Pa.); Bill Dworsky (men's soccer, Huntsville, Ala.); Elizabeth Pittman (women's basketball manager, Durham, N.C.); John Powell (men's fencing, New Haven, Conn.); and Jack Wooten (men's basketball, Burlington, N.C.)
An outstanding member of each varsity team was honored with the Athletic Director's Scholar-Athlete Award. Recipients for 2008-09 are: Adam Warren (Baseball), Jack Wooten (Men's Basketball), Rashanda McCants (Women's Basketball), Brock Baker (Men's Cross Country), Morgan Stengel (Women's Cross Country), John Powell (Men's Fencing), Mary Borgo (Women's Fencing), Britt van Beek (Field Hockey), Terrence Brown (Football), Chase MacFarland (Men's Golf), Sydney Crane (Women's Golf), Rachel Schneider (Gymnastics), Grant Zimmerman (Men's Lacrosse), Chelsea Parks (Women's Lacrosse), Katie Wood (Rowing), Michael Callahan (Men's Soccer), Yael Averbuch (Women's Soccer), Breanna Brown (Softball), Yi-Khy Saw (Men's Swimming and Diving), Lindsay McIlvain (Women's Swimming and Diving), Taylor Fogleman (Men's Tennis), Austin Smith (Women's Tennis), Daniel Keller (Men's Track and Field), Brie Felnagle (Women's Track and Field), Lauren Prussing (Volleyball) and Justin Dobies (Wrestling).
