Chapel Hill - The NCAA honored six University of North Carolina athletic teams with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate scores. UNC's honored teams include baseball, men's basketball, women's fencing, women's golf, men's lacrosse and women's volleyball.
It is the second consecutive Top 10 ranking for baseball, men's basketball, women's fencing, women's golf and women's volleyball.
These teams posted multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports. The most recent APR scores are multi-year rates based on the scores from the 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08 academic years. The public recognition awards are part of the overall Division I academic reform effort.
In May, the NCAA will release the four-year APRs for every sport. The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete. The APR includes eligibility, retention, and graduation in the calculation and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport.
Carolina was the only public Atlantic Coast Conference institution and one of three ACC schools overall to have six or more sports recognized by the NCAA. Duke (12), Boston College (11), UNC (6), Virginia (5), Wake Forest (5), Miami (4), Georgia Tech (3) and NC State (2) each had multiple sports honored.
The Tar Heels also compared favorably with a number of its peer institutions nationally, including Michigan (6), Texas (2), California-Berkeley (1) and Florida (1).
"We are certainly proud of our six Top 10 programs and we believe that all of our sports will achieve exemplary ratings when they are announced next month," says Director of Athletics Dick Baddour. "That's a credit to our coaches for recruiting true student-athletes, to the student-athletes for staying committed to academic integrity, to our staff for its timeless support and to the University of North Carolina for providing the education and inspiration to achieve academically."
