Carolina student-athletes graduating on Sunday, as well as December 2008 and 2009 grads, were honored at the third-annual Student-Athlete Graduation Reception on April 28. Held at the Alumni Center on campus, the event is sponsored by the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the Department of Athletics.
Seniors and their families enjoyed a program that included words from Director of Athletics Dick Baddour, Chancellor Holden Thorp, Rams Club Director of Endowment and Stewardship Sue Walsh, Assistant A.D. for Student-Athlete Development Cricket Lane, Senior Associate A.D. John Blanchard and senior rower Eugenia Delbono, who spoke on behalf of SAAC. Before and after the ceremony, Tar Heel student-athletes and their families mingled with coaches, administrators and staff to the sounds of "Equinox", Chancellor Thorp's band.
The event was initiated in response to the fact that some student-athletes miss commencement ceremonies while competing with their teams. It is organized by members of UNC's SAAC, which includes representatives from all 28 varsity teams, along with the office of Student-Athlete Development.
