June 7, 2009
This is the first time in Atlantic Coast Conference history that a member school played in a football bowl game, the men's basketball Final Four and the baseball College World Series in the same season. The Tar Heels played West Virginia in Charlotte in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, won the men's basketball national championship in Detroit and have now advanced to the baseball College World Series by sweeping East Carolina in the Super Regionals.
The Tar Heels also won the national championship in women's soccer and played in the national championship games in men's soccer and women's lacrosse. Carolina was in second place in the latest Learfield Sports NACDA Directors Cup standings, which reflect performance in men's and wonen's NCAA Tournaments.
