Tar Heels Wrap Up Action At Southern Scuffle

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Freshmen Andre Petroski and Corey Mock each posted seventh place finishes at the Southern Scuffle Thursday in Greensboro, N.C. as the Tar Heels claimed 16th with 42.5 team points. Carolina returns to action next weekend as they head to the Northeast to take on Hofstra and Rutgers.
Petroski opened the day with a 12-7 decision over Pennsylvania's Canaan Bethea before knocking off Michael Khoury of Lock Haven 3-2 in extra time. Petroski then dropped a major decision to Minnesota's Scott Glasser before beating Kent State's Brandon Johnson 6-4 to claim seventh place overall.
Mock was in total control Thursday as he posted back-to-back major decisions over Oregon State's Roger Pena by a 13-0 margin. The freshman 157 pounder went on for an 11-2 major decision over Cornell's Craig Eifert before pinning Princeton's Daniel Kolodzik in 1:13 to claim seventh place.
Minnesota's Glasser was a pain for the Tar Heels all day as he also knocked out Thomas Ferguson in the 174 bracket. The junior fell to Glasser after being taken out in his first bout of the day.
Danny Lopes went 1-1 on the day with a 5-1 win over Liberty's Kurtis Becker before dropping a close decision to Air Force's Cole VonOhlen by a 6-4 margin.
Thomas Scotton fell in extra time to eventual runner-up Cody Yohn of Minnesota by a 6-5 score. Scotton's next bout was also a tight affair as he fell 3-2 to The Citadel's Turtogtokh Luvsandorj who went on to finish in third place.
The Tar Heels will return to action Jan. 8 when they take on Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y. before making the trek to New Brunswick, N.J. to take on Rutgers on Jan. 9.
