Feb. 28, 2010 - RICHMOND, Va.- The UNC men's tennis team squeaked out a close away victory Sunday against a scrappy Virginia Commonwealth team.
The Tar Heels started strong in doubles action as the No. 2 pairing of Andrew Crone and Cameron Ahari made quick work of Camill Salomon and Oscar Perman, 8-2. Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy clinched the doubles point at No. 1 singles, taking the win 8-4.
In singles, freshman standout Jose Hernandez was back at the No. 2 flight, where he picked up the first singles win, 6-3, 6-1. VCU battled to within a point as No. 1 seed Thibaut Charron took down UNC's Clay Donato.
Fortunately for the Heels, Brennan Boyajian and Stefan Hardy picked up tough wins to clinch the team victory. At No. 4, Boyajian was able to hold on in the second set after taking the first set 6-0. Hardy then finished his three-set thriller at No. 3 singles, winning the last two sets for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win.
Though the match was decided, the Rams didn't go easily, winning the final two matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
With the win, #22 UNC moves to 8-2 on the year. The Tar Heels will be back in action Mar. 10 when they face #34 Rice University in Houston, Texas.
