#24 Demon Deacons Hand #20 Tar Heels 1st ACC Loss

CHAPEL HILL- Wake Forest handed the North Carolina men's tennis team its first ACC defeat of the season, and their first defeat in the last nine matches, Monday afternoon.
In a matchup of top-30 teams, the #24 Demon Deacons won five of the six singles flights against the #20 Heels in route to a 5-2 victory. With the loss, the Heels drop to 12-3 and 3-1 in the ACC.
North Carolina again showed their toughness in doubles, grabbing the point through the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles pairings. Clay Donato and Stefan Hardy, who today moved to 17th in the ITA rankings, won 8-4 in the No. 1 flight. Shortly after, Jose Hernandez and Andrew Crone finished off their opponents 8-5 at the No. 3 spot. At No. 2 doubles, Brennan Boyajian and Cameron Ahari came from 7-1 down to within a game of their opponents, eventually losing 9-7.
In singles, it was a tale of the tiebreakers. There were four second set breakers in all, and Wake Forest won each of them to decide four of their five singles wins. Brennan Boyajian was the lone singles winner, defeating Jonathan Wolff at the No. 3 flight 6-2, 6-3.
Head coach Sam Paul gave Wake Forest credit and said his team would need to improve mentally before they face top-ranked Virginia.
"You have to give Wake Forest credit, they just outplayed us today," Paul said. "We have got to get smarter before we Virginia comes in here."
The Heels will look to bounce back against the Cavaliers, ranked #1 nationally. The match will be held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill on Friday, April 2 at 3 p.m.
