CHAPEL HILL --- No. 1 North Carolina ran its conference record to 4-0 with a 5-2 win over No. 43 Wake Forest Wednesday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. After sweeping the doubles point, Carolina got singles victories from Sophie Grabinski, Gina Suarez-Malaguti, Shinann Featherston and Zoe De Bruycker to hold off the Demon Deacons.
UNC (17-3) shuffled its doubles lineup with no negative effect, as the Tar Heels took all three matches in convincing fashion. Grabinski and Jelena Durisic opened play with an 8-1 victory at No. 3 just minutes before Sanaz Marand and Suarez-Malaguti finished off an 8-2 win at No. 2. The No. 27 tandem of Katrina Tsang and Featherston then topped Emilee Malvehy and Aileen Davis at the top position, 8-5, to complete the sweep.
With Tsang a late scratch in singles, Carolina was forced to move players up a court. But once again it was the depth of the Tar Heel lineup that made the difference, with UNC scoring wins at positions three through six.
De Bruycker was first off, making short work of Anna Mydlowska at No. 6, 6-2, 6-0, to make it 2-0.
At No. 5, Featherston led 6-4, 3-0 over Katarina Reveche before the Wake Forest junior was forced to retire due to injury, pushing the Carolina lead to 3-0.
Suarez-Malaguti then clinched the dual victory with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ryan Cutillo at No. 4.
No. 118 Grabinski gave UNC its final point of the day, as the Tar Heel senior defeated Emilee Malvehy at No. 3, 7-5, 6-1.
Wake Forest (7-9, 1-3 ACC) got two points back at the top of the lineup, with No. 64 Martina Pavelec and Sasha Kulikova grabbing third-set tiebreak wins.
Carolina will hit the road for a match of conference matches this weekend. The Tar Heels travel to Virginia for a Friday afternoon match at 2, following by a showdown with Virginia Tech Saturday at noon.
