No. 2 Tar Heels Open ACC Play With Sweep Of NC State

CHAPEL HILL --- No. 2 North Carolina opened Atlantic Coast Conference play with a 7-0 sweep of No. 42 NC State Thursday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. UNC, which won its 12th straight regular season match against State, improves to 13-1 on the season, while the Wolfpack falls to 4-4. Katrina Tsang, Sanaz Marand, Jelena Durisic, Zoe De Bruycker and Shinann Featherston scored straight-set wins for the Tar Heels.
Carolina won the doubles point for the 13th time in 14 matches behind wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. The sophomore duo of Haley Hemm and Jocelyn Ffriend were first off after an 8-1 victory at No. 3, before No. 8 Marand and Sophie Grabinski sealed the point with an 8-4 win at No. 2.
The Tar Heels showed off their strength up and down the lineup in singles with five of the six matches ending in straight sets.
Durisic quickly put the hosts up 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Lenka Hojckova at the No. 3 position. Featherston would make it 3-0 courtesy of a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Ashley Miller, and No. 48 Marand clinched the match with her 6-0, 6-4 win over Berkeley Brock at No. 2.
De Bruycker continued her strong play at No. 4 with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chloe Smith, while No. 32 Tsang won the only matchup of ranked opponents on the day in a 6-3, 6-3 victory over No. 51 Sandhya Nagaraj.
The last match to finish needed a third-set tiebreak, with Grabinski outlasting Tana Illova at No. 5, 6-7, 6-2, (1-0).
Next up for Carolina is a Spring Break showdown with No. 6 Florida March 10 in Gainesville. That match is set to begin at 5 p.m.
