North Carolina finished fifth overall at the 2010 Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championships Saturday morning at Lake Hartwell, where the Tar Heels' best showing came from the novice eight, which finished third in its race. UNC's Megan McMullin, a senior from Burke, Va., was named to the All-ACC squad for the second year in a row.
Virginia took the title for the 10th time in the 11-year history of the event by winning all four races for 60 points. Clemson, the host and 2009 champion, finished second in each race and second overall with 50 points. Duke was third with a total of 36, Boston College fourth with 25, Carolina fifth with 18 and Miami sixth with 14.
"We're happy with the effort, but disappointed with the results," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "We feel like we could've done better and we were hoping to do better. I'm proud of the novice eight for coming in third. Overall, we're young and inexperienced and that definitely showed up at the ACC Championships."

The UNC second varsity eight was fifth in 7:44.9. North Carolina's lineup was Jennifer Nowicki (coxswain), Sefe Emokpae, Leah Kosow, Alexandra Biggers, Toni Moran, Shelby Austin, Erin Berg, Jessica Crumpler and Claire Wardius.

The novice eight's third-place finish came in 7:23.7. UNC's lineup was Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Alyssa Stewart, Sarah Giles, Alexandra Box, Allie Russell, Brye Balkum, Emily Chapin, Anastasia Bury and Isabel Blue.
y finishing higher than UNC in the team standings, Duke earned one point in the Carlyle Cup race, the annual all-sports competition between the Tar Heels and Blue Devils.
Next up for the Tar Heels is the Dad Vail Regatta, May 7-8 in Philadelphia.
"We need to pick ourselves up," Haney said, "and figure out what we need to do to make sure we have a successful race at Dad Vails to finish the season."
