DURHAM - The North Carolina Tar Heels lost a tightly contested second-round NCAA Tournament match to the Duke Blue Devils Saturday afternoon.
Sixteenth-ranked Duke outlasted No. 19 UNC in several three-set matches in the 4-1 victory.
"I'm going to miss coaching my seniors in team tennis; Andrew Crone and Clay Donato have done so much for us over the past four years," said UNC head coach Sam Paul. "We had our chances and it wasn't our day."
The Blue Devils jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by winning the third and first doubles flights consecutively. Brennan Boyajian and Cameron Ahari were only a game down to Duke's Dylan Arnould and David Holland, but their match was suspended when the Blue Devils won the team point.
Duke extended the lead to two when Luke Marchese won 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot. Stefan Hardy pulled the Tar Heels within one by defeating Arnould 7-5, 7-6(3), but Torsten Wietoska and Henrique Cunha answered with two three-set victories for Duke that clinched the match.
Donato, Hardy and freshman Jose Hernandez will travel to Athens, Ga. for the individual portion of the NCAA Championships, which run from May 21-31. Hernandez will participate in the singles tournament only and Hardy will only play doubles, while Donato will play in both tournaments.
