Hernandez Named Tar Heel Performer Of The Week

Jose Hernandez, a sophomore men's tennis player from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, is the Tar Heel Performer of the Week for January 10-16, 2011. He won both the singles and doubles championships of the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Hernandez won four straight matches to win the singles title, and lost only 17 games in the process, while beating players from Cal Poly, UCLA andArizona in straight sets before beating teammate Brennan Boyajian in the singles final. Hernandez also combined with Boyajian to take the doubles title as they defeated Hugh Clarke and Alfredo Moreno of Pepperdine in the championship match, 8-4.

Junior diver David MacDonald was named the Diver of the Meet at the 2011 SMU Swim Classic as he led the Tar Heels to a second-place finish in a field that included fourteams ranked in the Top 13 in the nation. MacDonald swept both diving events in the meet as UNC finished behind only Michigan in the team standings and edged #7 USC by two points for second place. MacDonald trailed for most of the one-meter diving competition before rallying on the last two dives to win with a score of 325.57, winning by less than two points. On Saturday, MacDonald took the lead on the second round of diving and scored a season-high 395.63 points to trounce the rest of the field, winning by 51 points over the second place diver.

In Saturday's doubleheader that marked the first matches at Carmichael Arena this season, Mock registered two victories in convincing fashion. In the Atlantic Coast Conference opener against Virginia Tech, Mock faced No. 5 Jesse Dong, the defending ACC champion at 157 pounds. Mock took control early and never relinquished the lead in an 11-5 victory. Dong is the highest ranked wrestler that any Tar Heel has defeated this season. Against Clarion, Mock pinned Kyle Braddock in only 1:39 for his eighth pin of the season. Mock leads the Tar Heels with 26 wins on the season.

Sophomore Clayton Parros won the 400 meters in 46.91 in the Tar Heels' first meet of the season at the Virginia Tech Invitational. That time, which won by nearly .75 seconds, places him fourth in the country. Parros also helped anchored the men's 4x400 to a third-place finish with a time of 3:13.11.
