ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Mike Rappo and Zac Bennett registered pins but Navy closed out the match with three consecutive victories to rally past North Carolina, 21-19, Friday night at Halsey Field House. Carolina falls to 6-7-1 with the defeat as the Midshipmen improve to 4-2.
The other Carolina victories came via a major decision win by senior Nick Stabile at 149 pounds and an upset decision from 184-pound freshman Antonio Giorgio, who upset No. 11 Luke Rebertus to record his second win over a ranked opponent this season.
The match kicked off at 141 pounds, where Rappo pinned Dustin Haislip with only 0:08 remaining in the third period. It was the senior's first pin of the season and staked the Tar Heels to an early 6-0 lead.
Stabile made the lead 10-0 with a convincing 13-0 victory against Collin Leadbeter at 149 pounds. It was the 2009 NCAA qualifiers second major decision victory of the season and his record now stands at 2-4 after recently returning to the mat from injury.
At 157 pounds, freshman Corey Mock saw his run of five consecutive victories end at the hands of sixth-ranked Bryce Saddoris, who captured a 12-5 decision. Navy won its second consecutive match at 165 pounds, when Mason Bailey defeated Thomas Scotton due to a riding time advantage after the two overtime periods. The two victories cut Carolina's lead to 10-6.
The Tar Heel lead was cut to one when Matt DeMichiel recorded a tight 7-6 decision over Carolina freshman Andre Petroski. However, Giorgio responded with a 4-2 win over Rebertus to increase the lead to 13-9. Giorgio avenged a loss to Rebertus at the Reno Tournament of Champions, when the Navy junior won 7-5.
At 197 pounds, Zac Bennett logged his eighth pin of the season to put the Tar Heels ahead 19-9. The redshirt freshman ended the bout against Greg Prioleau 0:32 into the second period. However, Navy's Dan Miller responded with a pin of Carolina's Ben Brooks with only 0:02 left in the match. At that point, Carolina led 19-15.
Navy's Aaron Kalil pulled the Midshipmen within one again with a 6-4 decision over Nick Shields at 125 pounds. The match came down to the 133-pound bout, where Carolina freshman Pat Owens was defeated by Allen Stein by a 9-6 score. With the decision, Navy took its first lead of the match and won 21-19.
Carolina will return to action Saturday night as the Tar Heels challenge Maryland at 7 p.m. in an Atlantic Coast Conference contest.
