ATHENS, Ga. - The No. 20 Tar Heel men's tennis team finished the ITA Kickoff in disappointing fashion, dropping a tough match Sunday to No. 11 Georgia 4-1.
After an emotional 4-3 victory Saturday over ACC opponent Georgia Tech, the Tar Heels were unable to retain their form against the home team, losing 4-1 after capturing the doubles point.
Though North Carolina lost four singles matches before the overall match ended early, they were able to again excel in doubles.
After losing the No. 3 doubles match, Stefan Hardy and Zach Hunter improved to 2-0 on the weekend at No. 2 doubles with a defeat of No. 23 Sadio Doumbia and Ignacio Taboada 9-8(4).
The upstart pairing of Brennan Boyajian and Jose Hernandez clinched the point when they defeated No. 14 Javier Garrapiz and Hernus Pieters at No. 1 doubles in another tiebreak, 9-8(2). The pair had an outstanding weekend, defeating the No. 8 team in the country before ousting the previously undefeated Georgia duo.
The Tar Heels will enjoy an extended break before they look to bounce back against Navy on Tuesday, Feb. 8 at Chapel Hill's Cone Kenfield Tennis Center.
