CHAPEL HILL --- North Carolina junior Lauren McHale won a pair of matches Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the ITA Carolina Regional Indoor Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. McHale also teamed with Haley Hemm to advance to the doubles quarters, joining teammates Laura Slater and Jennifer Stone.
McHale opened play Saturday with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over South Carolina's Josefin Andersson. The Englewood Cliffs, N.J., standout then knocked off the tournament's No. 3 seed, Keri Wong of Clemson, in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
Saturday was a tough day for seeded players in singles, as each of the top three was eliminated, including defending champion Zoe De Bruycker. De Bruycker started the day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wake Forest's Karen Forman. But the Saratoga, Calif., junior was upset in the round of 16 by Duke's Hanna Mar, 7-6 (3), 6-3.
Each of the top four seeds advanced in the doubles draw, however, including the fourth-seeded tandem of McHale and Hemm. The Carolina duo easily dispatched Rebecca Siegler and Zane Zarina of Wake Forest, 8-2. In the bottom half of the draw, UNC's Slater and Stone upset No. 5-8 seed Lucy Dougherty and Nitooli Wilkins of UNC Greensboro, 8-4.
