Hernandez Begins Play Thursday In NIIC

QUEENS, N.Y. - University of North Carolina junior men's tennis player Jose Hernandez of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic will represent the Tar Heels in the 2011 United States Tennis Association/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships held at the USTA-Bille Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y. Singles play begins Thursday.
Hernandez earned an ITA Wild Card spot into the singles field of 32 players. Normally players qualify through a series of regional tournaments held around the country. But at the time that Carolina was hosting the ITA Carolinas Regional in Chapel Hill last month Hernandez was representing his native country, the Dominican Republic, in the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
Hernandez then received one of the ITA wild cards. His opening match in the field of 32 singles players will be Thursday at 12 p.m. against Jamie Whiteford of William & Mary. Whiteford qualified as the USTA/ITA Atlantic Regional champion.
Hernandez and UNC head coach Sam Paul will attend he National Indoor Intercollegiate Championship Banquet which will occur Wednesday, November 2nd at 7:00 p.m. at the US Open Player Dining Room in Arthur Ashe Stadium at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. At 6:00 p.m. players will be escorted on a back stage tour of Arthur Ashe including Centre Court.
