FLUSHING, N.Y. --- North Carolina junior Lauren McHale continued her stellar fall run with a 6-2, 7-5 win over No. 27 Mary Anne Macfarlane of Alabama in the opening round of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships Thursday afternoon at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
"I think it will be a great opportunity for me," McHale said after the match. "I feel I have been working really hard lately and it's paying off. I am really excited to be here at home. I am staying home. I get to see my sister who I have not seen in a while and I get to see my mom. It's really fun."
The Englewood Cliffs, N.J., native got off to a fast start against Macfarlane, breaking early in the first set. McHale picked up a second break and served out the first set before winning a tight second frame to advance to the round of 16.
"Just have fun out there and not be nervous," McHale said of her approach to the event. "Take it all in and go for my shots."
McHale will meet Baylor's Diana Nakic, a three-set winner over UCLA freshman standout Robin Anderson, Friday at noon. Nakic, ranked No. 28 in the fall ITA poll, rallied to upset No. 5-8 seed Anderson, 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
