No. 5 Tar Heels Roll Past UNCG, Memphis

CHAPEL HILL --- The No. 5 North Carolina women's tennis team dominated in its final tune-up before Atlantic Coast Conference play, scoring a pair of wins over UNC Greensboro and Memphis Thursday afternoon at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Zoe De Bruycker, Jelena Durisic, Lauren McHale and Laura Slater were double winners for the Tar Heels, who dropped just two matches on the day.
Carolina (9-3) opened the day against UNCG, winning two of the three doubles matches to take the first point.
Durisic and Slater beat Mikayla Rogers and Devon Sutherland on court three, 8-2, followed by an 8-5 win from No. 5 Shinann Featherston and McHale on court one. The Spartans picked up their only win of the day at No. 2 doubles, with Niltooli Wilkins and Lucy Dougherty topping De Bruycker and Jennifer Stone, 8-6.
UNC dominated in singles play, will all six courts finishing in straight-set victories in favor of the Tar Heels.
Durisic finished first at No. 2 after sweeping both sets, 6-0, and Tessa Lyons and McHale followed suit to secure the win for Carolina.
An exciting finish occurred on court five with Tar Heel Jennifer Stone defeating Annette Rios in a first set tiebreak, 7-6 (4), before finishing out the second set, 6-4.
Carolina continued to roll in the nightcap, capturing the three doubles matches from Memphis and surrendering only one singles match.
De Bruycker and Durisic led the Tar Heels, blanking their opponents and remaining perfect on the day.
Freshman Laura Slater also showed great poise, winning four straight games in the second set to score a 6-3, 6-3 win over Andrea Arques-Garcia on court six.
North Carolina will now ready itself for the ACC portion of its schedule, as they travel to Coral Gables, Fla., March 9 to take on Miami Hurricanes at 2 p.m.
