CORNELIUS, N.C. -
University of North Carolina golfer Courtney Gunter fired a 5-under-par 211 and won the 85th Women's Carolinas Amateur Championship played at The Peninsula Club.
Gunter, a rising junior from Matthews, N.C., fired a 1-over par 73 in Thursday's final round to go with her 5-under 67 in the first round and 1-under 71 in the second round.
"I probably putted the best during the first round, but my putting was pretty good all week," says Gunter. "I also never got ahead of myself. I'm very honored to have my name attached with this championship. This is the most fun I've had at a tournament in a long time."
Gunter captured a two-stroke victory over Caroline Ellington, a rising sophomore at NC State. Ellington, from New Bern, carded an even par 72 on Thursday to finish at 3-under 213. Laura Wearn, from Charlotte, finished in third place at 2-under 214 after posting a 72 in the final round while Hayley Hammond, from Mooresville, finished fourth at 5-over 221.
The 54-hole event was played Thursday at The Peninsula Club which features a par 72, 5,813-yard layout. The championship is conducted by the Women's Carolinas Golf Association.
Gunter now holds the oldest women's amateur championship trophy in the Carolinas. She vowed to return to defend her title next year when the Championship will be held at Yeaman's Hall in Charleston, S.C.
