UNC Meets Maryland In Final ACC Series

CHAPEL HILL --- In their final league series of 2011, North Carolina will travel to Maryland for a three-game set beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. from Robert E. Taylor Stadium. The pivotal series will determine second place in the league entering the 2011 ACC Championship from May 13-15.

MARYLAND SERIES NOTES
• North Carolina owns a 34-15 advantage over Maryland dating to the 1995 season.
• Carolina has won nine of the last 12 meetings against the Terrapins, including five in a row in College Park, Md.
• UNC avoided a three-game sweep by the Terrapins with a 4-0 win in the last meeting between the two teams. Senior Brittany McKinney belted a two-run home run in that win.
NOTING THE TAR HEELS
• North Carolina returns to action after a two-week exam break and will look to build on a three-game win streak. UNC defeated Boston College twice April 23 in their last league action.
• The Tar Heels feature a balanced attack with a .280 team batting average, 2.43 staff ERA and a .959 fielding percentage.
• At the plate, Haleigh Dickey leads UNC with a .363 batting average, 11 home runs and 41 RBI. Dickey enters the weekend with a team-best seven game hit streak. Junior Kelli Wheeler adds 16 multi-hit games to the tune of a .360 batting average this season.
• Freshman Lori Spingola leads UNC in the circle with a 24-14 mark, 1.69 ERA and 244 strikeouts to just 44 walks. The Atlanta, Ga., natives 24 wins are the most since Lisa Norris registered 25 in 2007, and is good for fifth all-time in single season school history -- the school record is 27 held by Crystal Cox (UNC '06). Her 244 strikeouts rank ninth in single season school history. In addition, her 231.2 innings pitched rank seventh in single season school history.
NOTING THE TERRAPINS
• Maryland is enjoying their highest win total since 2001 and owns the most league wins (11) in school history this season.
• The Terrapins sport a .281 batting average, 1.66 staff ERA and a .969 fielding percentage. The Terps have not allowed any more than five runs in any of their 16 league contests to lead the ACC with a 1.66 staff ERA.
• In the circle, twice reigning ACC Pitcher of the Week Kerry Hickey leads the Terps with a 1.49 ERA, 17-7 record and 212 strikeouts. The duo of Ashley Czechner and Kendra Knight have combined for 20 wins. At the plate, Vangie Galindo anchors the offense with a .416 batting average.
