CHAPEL HILL - Jones Angell, host and color analyst for the Tar Heel Sports Network the past six years, will call radio play-by-play for University of North Carolina football and men's basketball broadcasts beginning in the 2011-12 season. Learfield Sports general manager Gary Sobba and UNC director of athletics Dick Baddour made the announcement today.
"We are delighted to announce that Jones Angell will be calling the play-by-play for Carolina football and men's basketball games," says Baddour. "He beat out a talented group of candidates from across the nation. What stood out to us was his preparation, attention to detail, easy listening style and knowledge of the history of Carolina athletics. He understands that he is following in the footsteps of someone our fans love dearly, but I believe strongly that Jones will make his own mark on Tar Heel athletics."
Angell, 32, a native of Jacksonville, N.C., has worked in a number of roles at the network for the past 11 years, including calling play-by-play for Carolina baseball the past eight seasons, which included five trips to the College World Series.
Angell moves into the play-by-play chair after the retirement of Hall of Fame broadcaster Woody Durham, who stepped down in April after 40 seasons as the Voice of the Tar Heels.
"We're thrilled that Jones will be the new lead announcer for Tar Heel Sports Properties," says Sobba. "He's been with us for 10-plus years and done a terrific job calling play-by-play for baseball and hosting and providing analysis on many football and basketballbroadcasts. He's a true Tar Heel who understands the wonderful heritage of Carolina athletics and he'll do an exemplary job of communicating that on the air to the school's many dedicated fans."
A 2001 UNC graduate, Angell was a member of Durham's broadcast team for nearly 70 Tar Heel football games and more than 200 men's basketball games, including the 2009 national championship. He called play-by-play on the network during several ACC Tournaments, the Las Vegas Invitational, Puerto Rico Tipoff Challenge and numerous preseason basketball games.
He has hosted TarHeelBlue.com broadcasts of Late Night with Roy Williams and football's Signing Day Live, produced and hosted features on the coaches' television shows, written for Tar Heel Monthly, and called play-by-play for UNC women's basketball and women's soccer.
Angell is as assistant director of New Media at UNC where he has helped to produce video board and special Internet features that have been shown online, at various athletic venues, and at special events such as the 100-year celebration of Carolina Basketball. He was an associate producer on the commemorative DVD that chronicled the 2005men's basketball national championship.
"I am incredibly honored and excited to become the next play-by-play voice for Carolina athletics," says Angell. "I want to thank Dick Baddour and Gary Sobba for the opportunity to fill what I consider to be the best job in our profession.
"No one will ever be able to replace Woody Durham and I will not try to do so. What I will try to do is continue the level of professionalism, broadcast excellence and passion for the Tar Heels that Woody brought to the position for so many years. Growing up listening to Woody, I understand the special relationship he had with Tar Heel fans and I look forward to cultivating a similar relationship as we experience Carolina athletics together over the next several years.
"Thanks to my broadcast partners - Adam Lucas, Eric Montross, Dave Nathan, Lee Pace, Rick Steinbacher and our chief network engineer, Ben Alexander - we have one of the best broadcast teams in the nation."
