Tar Heels Finish 12th At Southern Scuffle

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The North Carolina wrestling team wrapped up competition at the 2012 Southern Scuffle Monday and a pair of Tar Heels placed as UNC racked up 49 team points to finish 12th overall. Sophomore Corey Mock finished in fifth place at 157, while fellow sophomore Brian Bokoski claimed seventh overall at 125 pounds.
For the second straight tournament the Tar Heels had two wrestlers place in their respective weight classes as Mock placed in his third tournament of the year with his fifth place finish.
okoski continued his strong start to the season as he earned seventh place on Monday going 2-1 on the day.
125 Pounds
okoski opened the day with a narrow 7-6 decision over Rob Deutsch of Old Dominion before falling to No. 12 Steve Bonanno of Hofstra by a 14-7 margin. In the seventh place bout Bokoski claimed top honors with a 6-1 decision against Bricker Dixon of Cornell.
133 Pounds
Brock LiVorio dropped his only bout of the day dropping a narros 6-4 decision to ACC rival Joe Martinez of Virginia.
141 Pounds
Evan Henderson had to forfeit his lone match of the day as he was eliminated from competition.
157 Pounds
Mock was the lone Tar Heel to advance to the semifinals and faced a tough test in his first bout as No. 10 Dylan Alton of Penn State claimed a 4-1 decision sending Mock to the consolation bracket. A 7-6 defeat at the hands of Missouri's Drake Houdashelt sent Mock to the fifth place bout where he took on James Vollrath of Penn State. Mock claimed a 4-1 decision over Vollrath to earn his third showing in three tournaments this season.
165 Pounds
Senior Kyle Kiss had his run cut short as Virginia's Nicholas Sulzer claimed a 7-3 decision and fellow Tar Heel John Staudenmayer also came up short against Cornell's Marshall Peppelman falling via decision, 9-3.
174 Pounds
Andre Petroski fell to Ohio's Nick Perdue in his lone match of the day as Perdue claimed a 4-2 decision of the Tar Heel sophomore.
Up next for the Tar Heels is a visit from rival Duke on Monday, Jan. 9 as Carolina will host its first of three duals at Carmichael Auditorium at 7 p.m.
