DURHAM, N.C. --- No. 3 Duke swept the doubles point and got three singles wins to secure a 4-0 victory over No. 5 North Carolina Thursday afternoon at Ambler Tennis Stadium.
Duke (20-2, 9-0 ACC) took the early lead on the heels of a strong doubles performance. Hanna Mar and Annie Mulholland were first to finish on court three, topping Caroline Price and Gina Suarez-Malaguti, 8-2.
Courts one and two were both back-and-forth matches early before the hosts pulled away. No. 2 Shinann Featherston and Lauren McHale led No. 27 Mary Clayton and Ester Goldfield, 4-3, at the top position before the Duke pair ran off five straight games to take the match.
No. 28 Beatrice Capra and Rachel Kahan then completed the sweep on court two, getting a break at 6-5 and serving it out to beat No. 47 Haley Hemm and Tessa Lyons, 8-5.
The Blue Devils took control of singles early with first-set wins on four of six courts.
No. 102 Monica Turewicz made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Lyons on court six. Turewicz won the first nine games before Lyons got back on serve with a break to make it 2-3. But Turewicz got the break back in the next game and took the final three games for the win.
No. 2 Capra pushed the Duke lead to 3-0 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over No. 34 McHale on court one. McHale battled hard throughout despite a lingering foot injury but was unable to gain any traction against the freshman standout Capra.
No. 51 Mar completed the sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Suarez-Malaguti on court four.
Carolina (18-5, 8-1 ACC) led on two of the three remaining courts when the match was stopped. No. 37 Zoe De Bruycker was just two games away from beating No. 91 Goldfeld on court two, as the junior led 6-4, 4-1. No. 89 Featherston took the first set from No. 96 Kahan on court three, 6-4.
UNC concludes its regular season this weekend with home matches against Maryland and Boston College on Saturday and Sunday. The Tar Heels will honor their three seniors prior to the Sunday match against Boston College.
