CHAPEL HILL --- No. 5 North Carolina closed out its regular season in fine fashion Sunday, sweeping No. 68 Boston College, 4-0, on Senior Day at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The Tar Heels got doubles wins on courts two and three and singles victories from Shinann Featherston, Tessa Lyons and Haley Hemm to conclude the regular season 20-5 and 10-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
All three Tar Heel seniors contributed to the victory, as senior Jennifer Stone teamed with Caroline Price at No. 3 doubles for an 8-3 victory over Sarah Dalton and Ina Kauppila. No. 47 Hemm and Lyons finished soon after, defeating Katarina Gajic and Olga Khymlev on court two, 8-4, to clinch the point for Carolina.
Two more seniors got wins early in singles to put the hosts up 3-0. Hemm continued her standout weekend at No. 6 singles, coasting past Kauppila in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Featherston then got Carolina to within one of clinching with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jessica Wacnik on court two.
From there it was a race to the finish on the other four courts as UNC took the opening set in each of the six matches. Ultimately it was Lyons who secured the dual, topping Kelly Barry, 6-0, 6-3.
No. 37 Zoe De Bruycker was up a set and 3-3 on court one when the match was halted. No. 115 Caroline Price was just a game away from winning her court three match over Gajick, while Gina Suarez-Malaguti was also up a set on court four.
Carolina now sets its sights on defending its ACC Championship title, as the Tar Heels enter this year's event as the No. 2 seed. UNC will face the winner of the 7/10 match Friday at noon at the Cary Tennis Park.
