DURHAM, N.C- The UNC track and field team added five more wins Saturday at the Duke Invitational, as the Tar Heels took three indivdual and two relay wins on the second day of the meet. UNC tallied 10 total wins at the two-day meet, which was held at Duke's Wallace Wade Stadium.
Senior Ashley Verplank, who also won the 1,500 on Friday, took first again on Saturday in the 800 in 2:08.72. Senior Jacinda Evans won the women's long jump (19-3 ¼) and also took second in the 100 (11.80).
Senior Elizabeth Mott took first in the women's 400 (53.36) with the No. 5 time in the NCAA, leading a Carolina sweep in the event as seniors Zoey Russell (54.73) and Danielle Brock (54.83) took second and third. Mott, Russell and Brock also teamed with freshman Iman Wilkerson to take first in the women's 4x400 (3:43.66).
The men's 4x400 team of freshman Sean Sutton, sophomore Roy Smith, freshman Javonte Lipsey and junior Reynaldo Radlin grabbed the fifth win of the day for UNC, taking first in a time of 3:12.30. Lipsey (second, 47.46), Sutton (third, 47.80) and junior Clayton Parros (fourth, 47.96) were the top three collegiate finishers in the men's 400 just behind unattached Gary Kika (47.44). Smith also took second in the 110-meter hurdles in 14.73.
Senior Emory Parsons finished second in the men's discus throw (173-1), and junior Ariel Roberts took second in the women's high jump (5-9 ¼). Freshman O'Nell Wanliss took third in the men's 800 in 1:49.17, which is the No. 13 time in the NCAA, and freshman Annie LeHardy took third in the women's 3,000 meters in 9:56.55, which was faster than the previous stadium record.
In the men's pole vault, junior Pete Rehder took fourth in 15-7, junior Chadd Pierce finished fifth (15-1), and sophomore Ryan Ramsey took sixth (14-7 ¼). Sophomore Tristine Johnson added a fourth-place finish in the women's long jump (17-9 ½), while senior Malai Walker (12.19) and Wilkerson (12.20) took seventh and eighth in the 100.
Wilkerson also added a seventh-place finish in the 200 (24.72), while freshman Christopher Graves took seventh in the men's event (22.09). Junior Marisa Dobbins took seventh in the women's 800 in 2:12.23.
The Tar Heels will host the Kent Taylor-Joe Hilton Invitational next Saturday, April 14, at UNC's Belk Track. Field events will begin at 10 a.m., and track events start at 1:30 p.m.
