ATHENS, Ga.-- Erin Arevalo held the Tar Heel offense to three hits as 10th-seeded Georgia held on for a 2-1 victory over No. 21 North Carolina to win the Athens Regional at Jack Turner Softball Stadium Sunday afternoon. The Tar Heels finish the season with a 43-15 ledger.
Georgia loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the second but Gracie Goulder flew out to right field. Tisha Mahon made the catch and then threw a laser to home plate to make the double play, as the Tar Heels escaped the bases-loaded jam.
Constance Orr singled through the left side to lead off the top of the third and Chelsey Butler entered to pinch run at first base and stole second base. Kelsey Green laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Butler to third, but Tisha Mahon struck out and Kelli Wheeler hit a pop foul, stranding Butler at third.
Christine Olney broke the scoreless tie with a bases-loaded, RBI-single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth. Goulder followed by drawing a bases-loaded walk to put the Bulldogs ahead, 2-0.
UNC looked to score again in the top of the sixth as Jordan Scarboro led off with a pinch hit single down the left field line. But the next three batters popped out to end the threat.
Haleigh Dickey tried to rally the Tar Heels from behind, belting a solo home run over the wall in left center field in the top of the seventh, narrowing the deficit to one, 2-1. Logan Foulks grounded out and Spingola was credited with the loss, letting up five hits, two runs and five walks over six innings of work. The sophomore pitcher from Atlanta, Ga., also tallied five strikeouts in her sixth straight complete game for the Tar Heels.
Georgia advances to the Super Regional round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament where it will face the winner of the Knoxville Regional.
