FRANKLIN, TENN. - The No. 6 ranked University of North Carolina women's golf team is tied for sixth place going into the final round of the NCAA Championships being played at the Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Tar Heels, who were tied for second prior to the third round, carded a 15-over-par 303 for a 21-over 885 total, eight strokes behind leader Alabama.
Sophomore Katherine Perry led the Tar Heels in the third round by firing a 1-over-par 73. The Cary, N.C., native has a 2-over 218 total and is alone in 10th place after rallying on her closing holes. On the last five holes, Perry fired three birdies, one par and one bogey. Senior Catherine O'Donnell carded an 8-over 80 and is tied for 40th place. For the first time in this tournament, O'Donnell, from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., did not score a birdie. Sophomore Casey Grice, from College Station, Texas, posted a 5-over 77 for a 10-over 226 total. After firing a birdie on the 18th hole, Grice is tied for 54th place. Allie White, a senior from Lancaster, Ohio, posted a 6-over 78 for an 11-over 227 total and is tied for 64th while junior Courtney Gunter fired a 3-over 75 for a 14-over 230 total. Gunter, from Matthews, N.C., was 5-over on the front nine but carded two birdies on the back for her 3-over 75 and is tied for 82nd.
Second-ranked Alabama has led the field of 24 teams throughout the event and has a two-stroke lead over Southern California. The Crimson Tide carded a 306 in the third round for a 13-over 877 total while the Trojans fired a 6-over 294 on Thursday for a 15-over 879 total. Three teams are tied for third place at 19-over 883 - Purdue, South Carolina and Virginia. LSU is in sixth place at 20-over 884 while Carolina is one stroke back in seventh at 21-over 885. Rounding out the top 10, Arizona State is eighth at 23-over 887 and top-ranked UCLA and Oklahoma are tied for ninth place at 24-over 888.
Chirapat Jao-Javanil of Oklahoma Giulia Molinaro of Arizona State are tied for the individual lead at 4-under 212. Jao-Javanil fired a 2-under 70 on Thursday while Molinaro shot an even par 72. Alabama's Brooke Pancake and LSU's Tessa Teachman are one stroke back in a tie for third place at 3-under 213. South Carolina's Katie Burnett and Virginia's Portland Rosen are tied for fifth place at 1-under 215 while Doris Chen of Southern California is in seventh place at even par 216. Purdue's Laura Gonzales and NC State's Brittany Marchand are tied for eighth place at 1-over 217 and Carolina's Perry is in 10th place at 2-over 218.
The final round of the 72 hole event will be played Saturday. Thursday's third round was played at the par 72, 6,264-yard layout at Vanderbilt Legends Club. The Tar Heels begin teeing off the 10th tee Friday at 1:59 EDT. Live scoring is available on TarHeelBlue.com.
