Tar Heels Conclude U.S. Olympic Trials Competition

EUGENE, Ore. - Team USA will include two Tar Heel runners at the 2012 Olymic Games as both Shalane Flanagan and Alice Schmidt earned spots at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Flanagan will compete in the marathon, and Schmidt will run the 800.
In addition to the events they each qualified in, both Flanagan and Schmidt ran addition events at the Trials this past week. Flanagan was third in the 10,000 meters, which earned her a second position on Team USA, although she reliquished the position to focus on the marathon.
Schmidt advanced to Friday's semifinals of the 1,500 and finished 13th in 4:10.94. She will not advance to the finals of the event.
Vikas Gowda will be another Tar Heel competitor at the London Games, as he will be competiting in the discus throw for India.
Tasha Stanley, a 2012 graduate of UNC, will compete this weekend in the 800 at the Jamaican Olympic trials. Stay tuned to GoHeels.com for results.
