July 2, 2012 | Women's Golf
CHAPEL HILL, N.C.- University of North Carolina women's golf head coach Jan Mann announced her squad's 2012-13 schedule Monday. The Tar Heel Invitational will once again highlight the schedule for the 2012-13 season.
"We have a strong tournament schedule for 2012-13," says Mann. "We begin the fall season at the Cougar Classic in Charleston. The tournament field at the Cougar is the strongest it has ever been so it should be a great barometer for the rest of the year. Once again, our Tar Heel Invitational has a very strong field with 18 teams participating. We have added a couple of new tournaments including the UCF Challenge and the Lady Gator, and because of our 2011-12 ranking and finish at the NCAA Championships, we have been invited to participate in the NCAA Fall Preview at the University of Georgia. Both the fall and spring tournament schedule should prove to be a great challenge for our team."
The Tar Heels, who finished 10th at last year's NCAA Championships, will begin the fall campaign September 9-11 at the Cougar Classic in Hanahan, S.C., just outside Charleston. They will then travel to Franklin, Tenn., to play in the Mason Rudolph Championship September 21-23. Then it's on to Athens, Ga., October 5-7, for the Fall Preview. Carolina returns home to Chapel Hill for the final event of the fall, the 37th annual Tar Heel Invitational to be played October 12-14 at UNC Finley Golf Course.
The Tar Heels tee off their spring campaign Feb. 10-12 at the UCF Challenge in Sorrento, Fla. Carolina will play in three tournaments in March - the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, March 8-10, in Hilton Head, S.C.; the SunTrust Gator Invitational, March 15-17, in Gainesville, Fla.; and the Bryan National Collegiate, March 29-31, in Browns Summit, N.C. The ACC Championships will conclude the regular season and will be played April 19-21 at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The NCAA Regionals will take place May 9-11 and the NCAA Championships will be May 21-24 at the University of Georgia Course in Athens.
The No. 6 ranked Tar Heels are coming off a year in which they carded seven top-5 and 11 of 11 top-10 finishes. They were the runners-up at three tournaments - the ACC Championships, the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate and the Cougar Classic. Three Tar Heels were selected to the 2012 All-ACC team - Casey Grice, Catherine O'Donnell and Katherine Perry. Carolina finished 10th at the NCAA Championships, the eighth top-10 finish in school history.
