Schmidt Misses In 800 Semifinal

LONDON - Alice Schmidt put in a good showing but missed out on making the women's 800 final at the 2012 Olympics, placing 17th overall and fourth in her heat. The former Tar Heel ran in 2:01.63, slightly better than her time in yesterday's qualifier.
Kenyan Pamela Jelimo bested Schmidt's heat with an automatic qualifying time of 1:59.42. Caster Semenya of South Africa holds the best time of the 800-meter semis at 1:57.67, which marked a season best for her. American Alysia Johnson Montano was the fastest American in the semifinals, ranking fourth with her race of 1:58.42.
