WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina men's tennis team opened up the Wake Forest Invitational by going 7-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles at the Wake Forest Tennis Center on Friday.

Carolina's duo of Esben Hess-Olesen and Brett Clark, the No. 1 doubles seed in the A doubles flight, cruised past Stetson's doubles pairing 8-1. Also in the A doubles draw, senior Nelson Vick and sophomore Stuart DePaolo combined to edge Penn State's Russell Bader and Michael Reilly 8-6.

In singles play, top-seeded Esben Hess-Olesen picked up two straight-sets victories in the A1 singles flight. The sophomore, ranked 28th nationally, defeated Charlotte's Jack Williams 6-4, 6-3 before taking down Penn State's Russell Bader 6-2, 6-3 to advance to the A1 semifinals.

Senior Nelson Vick and sophomore Brett Clark both advanced to the seminfinals of the A2 singles draw. Clark defeated Norfolk's Robin Riethmueller 6-2, 6-2 and Stetson's Nathan Debut 6-3, 6-4. Vick, seeded No. 2 in the A2 singles draw, downed Penn State's Tomas Hanzlik 6-3, 6-4 and N.C. State's Thomas Weigel 7-6(4), 6-2.

Stuart DePaolo received a first match bye in the B-1 singles draw before outlasting Penn State's Matt Barry 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.

Saturday's schedule includes the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds in doubles, in addition to the semifinals matches for singles.
