Tar Heel Rundown: October 7
October 7, 2013 | General
Football
T.J. Logan debuted against Virginia Tech. Expect to see more of him going forward...The switch to Marquise Williams caught Virginia Tech off-guard...Three plays summarized Carolina's loss in Blacksburg...The DTH talks to several of the primary parties involved in making game time decisions, and asks whether there's any noon game relief in sight for the Tar Heels...Expect a quieter football start to the week. There's no Larry Fedora press conference today because of the off day on Saturday...Play of the game on Saturday for the Tar Heels had to be this incredibly athletic Eric Ebron catch (side note: Marquise Williams stood in against a tough rush and absorbed a big hit to make the throw), right?
Basketball
Danny Green knows teams aren't going to give him the three-pointer this year, so he's worked on other ways to contribute...The loaded 2013-14 schedule hasn't even started yet, but there's already news that makes Carolina's 2014-15 schedule look equally impressive. According to ESPN (which should know), the field for the Battle for Atlantis in the Bahamas over (in all likelihood) Thanksgiving weekend includes Carolina, UCLA, Wisconsin, Butler, Florida, Oklahoma, UAB and Georgetown. Not coincidentally, if you'll remember, ESPN just acquired the rights to that particular tournament...
Phil Ford had some good advice for students on campus over the weekend...The Knicks want Raymond Felton to be more of a leader, and he's learned lots from Jason Kidd in that department...Tyler Zeller had a very good scrimmage for the Cavs before suffering a hip strain...Harrison Barnes got the first preseason start for the Warriors and looks to be in a battle for the starting spot with Klay Thompson...
Olympic sports
What a run by Jamie Loeb in the All-American Singles draw in Pacific Palisades, as the freshman went 11-0 to win the individual title. She's the first player in Tar Heel history to win the event...Volleyball picked up a pair of road ACC sweeps to move to 15-0 and has a chance to move into the national top ten this week...Women's soccer has won three games in a row after yesterday's 3-1 win over Maryland...Field hockey bounced back from Saturday's loss to the Terps with a win over Cal...After suitable consideration, Matt Harvey has indeed decided to have Tommy John surgery, and will likely be out for all of 2014...The Navy team swept the Blue squad in the first series of the Fall World Series.
Today's games
Wrestling hosts a unique event today at noon, the Rumble in the Pit. It's essentially a Blue-White scrimmage, but they hold it in The Pit.
Tar Heels in the NFL
Welcome back Hakeem Nicks, as he had nine catches for 142 yards...In a 51-48 game that didn't have much tackling, Bruce Carter made four tackles for the Cowboys against the Broncos...Giovani Bernard had 13 carries for 62 yards...Zach Brown had two tackles for the Titans...Robert Quinn had a tackle for loss for the Rams...QB controversy in Houston is heating up. T.J. Yates got into the fourth quarter last night after Matt Schaub struggled. Yates didn't get to do much, completing three of five passes, and for now Gary Kubiak says Schaub is still the starter.
Today in Tar Heel history
Oct. 7, 1995: Mack Brown and the Tar Heels topped ninth-ranked Virginia, 22-17, in Chapel Hill. Leon Johnson converted a key late fourth-down play for 19 yards to help the Tar Heels make the late rally.

Every once in a while, believe it or not, we read something that's not about sports. This in-depth story on the day Steve Jobs debuted the iPhone is well worth a read.
