Tar Heel Rundown: November 1
November 1, 2013 | General
If you're still in the spirit, you can start your day with a gallery of the best UNC-related pumpkins and costumes. And while you'll hear a lot about the Franklin Street revelry, you won't hear as much about this: a group of UNC student-athletes dressed up and took candy to the kids at the North Carolina Children's Hospital. Some great photos in that gallery.
And here's the Diamond Heels in full regalia following their annual Halloween show:

Football
Mikey Bart is having an early impact for the Tar Heels...A punt return was a big story against State last year, and Ryan Switzer hopes to make that play this year...NC State is using an interesting midfield logo for the game...
Always like seeing what the coordinators have to say about the upcoming matchup:
Here's the uniforms the Tar Heels will be wearing tomorrow:

Tar Heels in the NFL
You can be excused for forgetting there was NFL football last night. You can not, however, be excused for missing what has been described as the "best run of the year in the NFL," by Gio Bernard. You need to see this (or see it again, if you've already seen it):

Basketball
Carolina is No. 12 in the preseason AP poll, which is relatively uncharted territory...For the sake of reference: tonight's exhibition opponent, UNC Pembroke, was in a close one with NC State on Tuesday before eventually falling by 11...Another story along the lines of "Thank goodness the Big East teams are here to help save ACC basketball"...A fun way to pass some time at work/class on Friday: go through our Preseason Central page and see which stories you missed...Here's what Joel James learned from watching the 1993 championship game on film...
A preseason feature on Jackson Simmons from GoHeelsTV:
Tar Heels in the NBA
The Raptors were very pleased with Tyler Hansbrough's opening night performance, and it elicited some very Tyler-esque quotes...Raymond Felton had 13 points and six assists against the Bulls...Harrison Barnes (foot) and Reggie Bullock didn't play in the Warriors-Clippers game...Ed Davis did not reach agreement with Memphis on an extension and will be a restricted free agent this summer.
Olympic sports
Women's soccer shut out No. 25 Duke, 3-0...Take a second and vote for Kealia Ohai for the Senior CLASS award...Colin Moran will play in the Arizona Fall League Stars Game tomorrow...Speaking of Moran, he plays a big role in the baseball tribute video that was played recently when the Diamond Heels were honored at Kenan Stadium:
Today's games
Men's basketball hosts UNC Pembroke in an exhibition (GoHeels TV subscribers watch here)...Men's tennis hosts the Jim Russell Memorial, while swimming hosts future ACC foe Louisville. Cross country is at the ACC Championships in Kernersville. Men's soccer is at Virginia at 7 p.m. on the ACCDN, and volleyball is at FSU at 7 p.m. on ESPN3 in a big one.
Today in Tar Heel history
Nov. 1, 1978: David Thornton was born. This former member of the Indianapolis Colts and Tennessee Titans has one of the best stories in the recent era of Carolina football, as he overcame quite a bit to eventually earn a Tar Heel scholarship and play in the NFL. He's now back with the Colts in a front office role.
Long read
If you've ever scrolled through the Twitter mentions of a college athlete, you know that it can be a cesspool. It can have an effect.
