Novice Eight Provides UNC Highlight
May 12, 2013 | Women's Rowing
The novice eight's second-place finish highlighted North Carolina's performance on Sunday at the 14th-annual Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Championships, held at Lake Hartwell in Clemson, S.C. UNC's novice eight came into the race seeded fifth of six crews but rowed the course in 7:30.24, behind only Virginia (7:18.61), which swept all four races to claim the ACC crown.
"Clearly the novice eight was awesome," UNC coach Sarah Haney said. "It was a phenomenal race and they're elated. It was obviously their best race of the season."
UNC's novice eight lineup was Kylee Wooten (coxswain), Bridget Taylor, Addie Schoenberger, Victoria McGee, Tatianna Blount, Emory Byrd, Ashley Long, Liz Marshall and Emmy Johnson.
Sunday's took place under clear and sunny skies, with cool temperatures in the 60s but also a consistent cross and head wind of 11 to 15 miles an hour which held down competitive times.
Virginia finished the day with 60 points, ahead of Clemson (43), Duke (41), Miami (27), Boston College (23) and UNC 16).
Alex McClelland, a senior from Winter Park, Fla., represented the Tar Heels on the All-ACC team.
UNC was fifth in the varsity four and sixth in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight.
"We felt like we put our best foot forward today," Haney said. "In some of the events that came through in the results and in some it didn't, but we're really proud of our team and the progression we've made from week to week in all of our boats and really proud of how they stepped up today in the conference championship."
"We were really proud of the varsity four and how they handled the race. They had the best race of their season today and that's exactly what you want."
The varsity four lineup was Elizabeth Ayers (coxswain), Sarah Giles, Ali Margherio, Steph Henrich and Jessica Cooper.
"With the second varsity eight, even though we finished sixth, we feel good about progressing through the season and being faster now than we have been," Haney said. "And the same thing for the varsity eight. It was a solid race, they felt good about the mental focus - it's the most focused they've been all season heading into a race."
UNC's second varsity eight lineup was Carie Mastrianni (coxswain), Lauren Colberg, Katie Burger, Elise Widman, Amanda Truesdell, Julie Peterson, Chelsea Gustafson, Kat Summerton and Claire Wardius.
UNC's varsity eight lineup was Allie Davis (coxswain), Kate McCormick,
Sarah Priest, Alex McClelland, Jasmine Dennis, Lucie Kloak, Morgan Koder, Emily Leidolf and Maria Santoyo.
