Tar Heel Rundown: September 13
September 13, 2013 | General
Big achievement for Anson Dorrance last night, as he won his 750th career game. The man has 750 wins and has only lost 49 times (750-49-29). That means he loses less than 10% of the time that his team plays. Those are Nintendo numbers. More below.
Football
Tre Boston wears a bracelet that reads Awesome=Me, and after his game-changing interception against Middle Tennessee, I'd have to agree...Story of the first two games might be Norkeithus Otis, who is leading the ACC in sacks and tackles for loss:
Basketball
I'm on a crusade to rid the world of the scourge of slideshows that masquerade as stories, so let me save you the time and tell you there are no Tar Heels on this Sporting News list of preseason All-Americans...The same publication did have Carolina ninth in its preseason top-25...TBJ presented Dean Smith with a lifetime achievement award for diversity efforts, and the video of Hubert Davis' acceptance speech on Coach Smith's behalf is worth watching...Season analysis of Marcus Paige's freshman year. Some surprising home/road splits here...Coach K flatly said Duke will not schedule Maryland once the Terps leave the ACC.

Big men's soccer game tonight in Chapel Hill...Women's soccer got a 2-1 win at Virginia Tech last night, which gave Anson Dorrance his 750th career win.

Today in Tar Heel history
Sept. 13, 1952: On this day 61 years ago, a football game was not played. That wouldn't be noteworthy, except that one had been scheduled for the Tar Heels, but it had to be canceled due to a polio outbreak on campus. Thank you, Dr. Salk.
Long read
Nothing especially timely for today, so let's look back at a story from 30 years ago about a Ralph Sampson-James Worthy (and Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins) matchup at Carmichael. Contains an eyewitness report of Dean Smith asking fans not to wave their arms to distract opposing free throw shooters--that's not just urban legend.
