Tar Heel Rundown: September 2
September 2, 2013 | General
Imagine having this collection of talent on one bench: Sally Sather shot this image of the Tar Heel basketball coaching staff in the early 1980s. Everyone in that photo earned national coach of the year at least once.
As a reminder, we want your photo requests (any sport) for the Rundown, so send us a quick tweet.
Hope everyone had a good Labor Day weekend, and if you're a Tar Heel, you probably did: Carolina teams went 8-0 from Friday through Sunday. More details below.
Football
MTSU starting quarterback Logan Kilgore may not play on Saturday...Did you remember there's an actual ACC football game today? There is: FSU at Pitt. The folks at Pittsburgh are very excited about the ACC...
NFL Hall of Famer/CBS pregame show personality Shannon Sharpe is a big fan of Carolina's chrome helmets:
The Tar Heels chrome helmets are the best in football.#Iwantone

Basketball
The most unexpected meeting of the weekend--Chris Corchiani and Roy Williams at Harris Teeter...Williams spoke at a coaching clinic recently, and these notes give good insight into the 11th-year Tar Heel head coach's philosophy on leadership...If you know basketball recruiting, you know the name Dave Telep. Very interesting move by the highly respected braintrust of the San Antonio Spurs, as they've hired Telep for the front office.
Olympic sports
Really rough season for Daniel Bard, who has now been designated for assignment by the Red Sox after struggling in the minors this weekend...Here's a good season preview of the men's soccer team...Good feature from Springfield on Sylvia Hatchell achieving her dream of the Hall of Fame...Women's soccer won a pair...Volleyball took the tournament title in Murfreesboro...Men's soccer got an overtime win on Friday and then was postponed Sunday...Top-ranked field hockey improved to 2-0.
The Mariners have moved Dustin Ackley around quite a bit this year, and he made an incredible catch in center this weekend:
Tar Heels in the NFL
The Texans put Brennan Williams on the DL with a knee injury, ending his rookie season before it started...The case for T.J. Yates to be Houston's backup QB (keep in mind he is battling a hometown favorite in University of Houston's Case Keenum)...Seventh round pick Travis Bond was one of the Vikings' final cuts...A disappointed Jonathan Cooper of the Arizona Cardinals is keeping his season-ending injury in perspective.
Today's games
The men's soccer match against Coastal that was postponed by bad weather on Sunday has been rescheduled for today at 10:30 a.m. (yes, 10:30). It's two top-15 teams and admission is free, so get your holiday started with the Tar Heels. If you can't make it, watch live on GoHeels TV.
Today in Tar Heel history
Sept. 2, 2000: Ronald Curry returned from his Achilles injury and promptly showed everyone what they'd missed, as he accounted for 261 yards of offense in Carolina's season-opening 30-9 win over Tulsa. In case you've forgotten how good he was, here's the pre-injury Curry managing to run through the ferocious wind (I think I'm still picking sand out of my hair) at the Las Vegas Bowl:
Long read
At some point in our lives, all of us have had at least a passing interest in high school sports for some reason. Some of us never outgrow it, and this story on Salisbury Post sports editor Ronnie Gallagher, who died Friday, is a terrific tribute to one of those people.
