Tar Heel Rundown: September 25
September 25, 2013 | General
Reminder: big volleyball game tonight at Carmichael, as the 14th-ranked and undefeated Tar Heels open ACC play against NC State. If you're local, head out to the match. If not, you can watch it on ESPNU.
Football
Larry Fedora and Ruffin McNeill have a longer history against each other than you might expect...Big loss for ECU, as their starting nose tackle is suspended for Saturday's game...A.J. Blue wants to help the struggling UNC running game...Music City Bowl vs. Tennessee in one of these bowl projections? Sounds good...Independence Bowl vs. Missouri in another projection? Uh, let's go back to that Music City one...Video feature on a program at UNC that helps sick kids go to Tar Heel games:
Basketball
The NBA is considering allowing teams to wear nicknames on jerseys. But don't expect to see "Butter" on the back of a Suns jersey anytime soon:
Not of a fan of the nickname idea.Having your last name on the back of your jersey isn't just representing yourself, but your family as well
— Kendall Marshall (@KButter5) September 23, 2013
Kendall is probably right, but a Tar Heel jersey with Psycho T on the back might be pretty cool...Speaking of Marshall, a noted shoe guru, you just know he'd be fired up for this:

The NCAA thought about moving the Final Four out of domes, but has now thought better of it, which at least one person says is a good idea...Raymond Felton has lost between 10 and 15 pounds this summer and says the Knicks are younger and more dangerous...Check back on the site later today for a story on James Michael McAdoo.
Olympic sports
Daniel Bard is on his way back, now with the Cubs. He's strongly considering winter ball this offseason...Men's soccer got an unpleasant surprise, losing a nonconference match to William & Mary, 1-0...Working here tends to remind you that student-athletes are pretty incredible, and do lots more than we ever did when we were in college. Don't believe it? Watch this feature on field hockey's Loren Shealy, who packs an amazing amount of activities into her college life--oh, and she happens to play on the top-ranked team in the country.
Today's games
It's the ACC opener for the undefeated volleyball team, with an 8 p.m. start time at Carmichael against NC State on ESPNU.
Tar Heels in the NFL
A couple Tar Heels have made news recently on the Dan Patrick show, but yesterday it was Giovani Bernard, who had a good appearance on the show and tried to pass himself off as six feet tall:
Today in Tar Heel history
Sept. 25: What a day for Tar Heel birthdays. WNBA standout and new UNC assistant coach Ivory Latta turns 29, hoops Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo turns 62 and Rashad McCants turns 29.
