Tar Heel Rundown: September 5
September 5, 2013 | General
Say this softly, so as not to jinx it, but the weather for Saturday's home football opener (plus a couple of big women's soccer matches in Durham) is looking really good.
Football
Atlanta-area Tar Heels: Alge Crumpler has a new radio show in your area...Another bowl projection: Tar Heels in the Belk Bowl (Charlotte)...One writer says the ACC needs Miami this week (see #8)...Uniforms matter in today's college football world, and Carolina is decidedly on board with that trend...A name you may not know yet but will very soon is Bug Howard, Carolina's freshman wide receiver. Q&A with the man they call Bug...
Speaking of fashion, argyle end zones appear to be in the works for Saturday...

Basketball
Interesting quick read on the history of UNLV and Tarkanian and whether the program can get back to that level. Rebels are not on UNC's schedule after playing them the last two years...Seven different ways the NBA's new camera system will change basketball as we know it...Raymond Felton and Marcus Paige got together yesterday for a point guard photo shoot:

Preseason scouting video on James Michael McAdoo, mostly compiled from an NBA perspective but still a solid way to meet your offseason UNC hoops fix needs:
Olympic sports
Chris Munnelly has pitched very well in his first summer of pro ball...The Cubs claimed Daniel Bard (and in the process DFA a former Oregon State Beaver--VENGEANCE IS OURS!!!)...Two freshmen had solid performances in the baseball team's first fall scrimmage...Kyle Seager is having a solid power year, and he's doing it against both lefties and righties...
Today's games
None.
Tar Heels in the NFL
Julius Peppers restructured his contract, and he'll have to get by on $9.9 million this season. Don't fret, though--he gets the other $3 million as a signing bonus...Hakeem Nicks says his health is not an issue for the opener...You'll see Jeff Saturday in a pre-taped segment on NBC tonight before the NFL season opener.
Today in Tar Heel history
Sept. 5, 1992: Natrone Means bulldozed to 112 yards on 21 carries and Mike Faulkerson added three scores on the ground as Carolina beat Wake Forest in the season opener, 35-17.
Long read
We're going with a "long watch" instead of "long read" today. Guessing that somewhere in these five minutes you'll see something that reminds you of your time at Carolina. The development office did a really good job with this:
